Berbatov urges Man United to sign England ‘stand out’

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has encouraged them to sign their second England star of this transfer window.

The Red Devils have already signed one England player this summer as they sealed the purchase of long-term target Jadon Sancho.

The Borussia Dortmund winger has been impressing in the Bundesliga for the past few years. Man United attempted to sign him last summer but they have sealed the deal ahead of the 2021/22 season.

England and the best kind of final apathy

Sancho will join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side for £73m once Euro 2020 is concluded.

England have reached the final of this summer’s tournament and Berbatov has called for United to sign Sancho’s teammate Kalvin Phillips.

The 25-year-old has spent his whole career with Leeds United so far. His game has come on leaps and bounds under the tutelage of Marcelo Bielsa.

The midfielder has been one of Leeds’ best players for the past few years. This led to him making his senior England debut last year.

Phillips has gone onto play 14 times for Gareth Southgate’s side and he has been integral at this summer’s European Championships.

Berbatov has told Betfair that Man United should sign Phillips:

“Kalvin Phillips stood out again too [in the 2-1 semi-final win over Denmark]. He’s been one of the players of the tournament and, sooner or later, I expect him to leave Leeds for a bigger club.

“Offers will come in for him after the tournament. He is playing with maturity, agility, knowing when to run with the ball and when to pass.

“I would like to see him sign for Manchester United.”

Berbatov went onto say that he is “pleased” that his former club have “finally” signed Sancho:

“Some fans are disappointed that Sancho hasn’t played more for England at Euro 2020. But I am just pleased that Manchester United have signed him, finally.

“Does Sancho’s arrival make them serious Premier League title contenders?

“I can’t wait to see him playing in a red shirt. But let’s wait and see what it means for United’s title chances.

“What does this signing mean for Anthony Martial? Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to be clever in rotating his attacking players.”
